This is where I share the exegetical thoughts that have been growing in my mind. Exegesis is a critical explanation or interpretation of a text, especially a religious text. Traditionally the term was used primarily for work with the Bible. In modern usage, biblical exegesis is used to distinguish it from other critical text explanation. Textual criticism investigates the history and origins of the text, but exegesis may include the study of the historical and cultural backgrounds of the author, text, and original audience.

SEE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF THSEOLOGY. Exegesis (ἐξήγησις) is statement, explanatioa, from ἐξηγέομαι, I lead, describe, explain; and froan this, an exegete, ἐξηγητής, guide, interpreter. The word exegetical, then, includes all that belongs to explassat/on, and Exegetical Theology includes all that belongs to the explanation and interpretation of Exegetical Theology - accurate exegesis of Scripture - Exegetical Theology. Theology is the study of God, his works and word. All theological endeavors should be rooted in the careful and intelligent study of the words and phrases of Scripture. That process of study is what students of Scripture call exegesis.

In Toward an Exegetical Theology Walter Kaiser proposes a method of interpretation and exegesis which bridges the gap between the study of the biblical text and the actual delivery of that study to a congregation.

The title of this website, ExegeticalTheology.org, expresses a sincere aim and not an achieved goal. a critical interpretation or explication, especially of biblical and other religious texts.

In other words, exegesis looks at the trees, theology looks at the forest. Evangelicals believe in what is called the dual authorship of Scripture, believing that the Bible is the product of God (being theopneustos “God-breathed” 2 Tim. 3:16) who fully utilized man in all ways to produce an inspired text.
